Make Education Your Sport.
The intro:
In an effort to develop an unbiased philosophy of life I always start with equality. We are all brothers and sisters of a perfect god then we are all of equal potential and equal value at creation. Having free will, how we act and react will determine who we become. Though we may have differing advantages in society thru birth, we are all equal in time. It is how we use our time that is the equalizer.
Make Education Your Sport:
I recall years ago in primary education saying and hearing students say "teacher, do we really need to know this? Am i ever going to use this?". I hear that it is a question still being asked today. I only wish the teacher replied "If you learn it...maybe. If you don't learn it, you'll never need to know it". I don't know if you can say about education what they apply to guns..."Education is like a parachute. If you don't have one when you need it, you'll never need it again".
It seems like we all easily grasp the importance of hard work and training to excell in sports as a means to be successful in life. It seems like we are somehow unable to connect the need for hard work in study to achieve excellence in education to then achieve success in life.
I read @Tyrus' first book Just Tyrus. It was an excellent read on perseverence. He was able to succeed in sports, education, and life. If you haven't read it, You shoud. Nuff Said is now on order at this time.
Sports can be looked at as just entertainment but it is more than that. It is an endeavor without acommodation. There are no participation trophies and no points for losing. You can do it and win if you work hard and become the best. The relationship between extreme training and preparation prior to competition is easily understood. The need to push yourself to the limit, past the limit, and search for ever new limits is embraced. The need to make your life hard now to win, to survive, and to have a better future is clear as it is also is in the military.
This reminds me that everything you need to know about life can be learned from a Clint Eastwood film. Here is a quote from The Outlaw Josey Wales.( "Now remember, things look bad and it looks like you're not gonna make it, then you gotta get mean. I mean plumb, mad-dog mean. 'Cause if you lose your head and you give up then you neither live nor win. That's just the way it is." ) This is kind about not giving up and pushing yourself.
Sports is a path to success available regardless of race or social status. The downside is, its only available to those with a body type or physical composition suited to a particular sport. (@GregGutfeld was not likely to to ever play for the Knicks. Good thing he like Bandit Darville is good at going from place to place and showing off. He also has more #1 best sellers than Tom Brady.) Additionally, only a very few participants are needed. I think that the NBA doesn't draft more than about 60 atheletes in any given year. Of all of the participants who make up the bell curve of skill and ability, they only take the peak and disregard all of those below the cut line. For those who make it, the professional athlete career is relatively short, about 5 years I think.
The question is what happens to all of the high school and college participants who don't make the cut? What is their fall back position? Do they have one? If you see sports as your only avenue to success, why would focus on school? You risk getting beat by your fellow contestant who only practices sport. When the government advocates midnight basketball instead of homework and being in bed at midnight in preparation for school the following day, why would you value school. This is completely understandable.
Can we inspire students to see education like a sport? Education is available to all regardless of race, gender, beauty, weight, and any other identifier. Since you are training the brain, it is essentially available to all. Education and time are the great equalizer. Education is a path to success for all. If students embraced education as a sport, they'd likely see their teachers as their coach. Students would likely appreciate the teachers more. Teachers would likely be more motivated to work harder when appreciated. Students would then demand the teacher to push them harder, to make them better, to help them win in their future life. The only downside is the quality of basketball specifically, and sports in general may suffer.
@Tyrus this is youe next book if you have'nt already covered it in "Nuff Said". Just Do It. ;)
To mitigate any damage to highschool and college atheletes, in our quest for exeellence in atheletic entertainment, who fall below the cut line, can we offer a a do over or a mulligan for their effort? Could we offer free trade school or community college to highschool atheletes who don't earn a college scholarship? Can we pay college atheletes to play college sports and only play college sports for 4 years for the entertainment of the student body. After serving their college for 4 years, should they receive 4 years of free room and board, tuition, and continued salary to study and only study academics. A kind of GI bill or SA bill if you will. There is a tremendous amount of money in sports and sports betting. How many student atheletes are used up and cast aside (like a greyhound dog) in quest to provide excellence in this entertainment? Can we give them a chance to train their brain? San we help them make academics their next sport?
I think this is enough said or too much said for now.
I'm going to step back a bit from burdening everyone with my long winded posts. My focus was to promote that all humans are created equal with an equal amount of time in each day. I wanted to be one more voice that with hard work and skill training each individual can meet their potential. The hardness of the path is what gives the achievement its value. Serve others more than you demand others to serve you. Social assistance and social promotion is more likely to hurt you by reducing your need for skill acquisition. That's basically it. Because of believing these truths that should be self evident, @dunnkruger naturally aligns more with conservatives. These are not only conservative principles, they are available to all. It pains me to see people have been convinced that they are disadvantaged and are waiting to be lifted up. I fear that they will wait so long that they will never advance to their fullest distance. It is never too late to start. Please start now.
IMHO the dirty little ...
@dunnkruger was looking for secular comment on "serve your fellow man". But most were Biblical
Think about the result of serving others first VS waiting for others to serve you before reciprocating.
If everyone insist on being served before reciprocating, then everyone is just waiting and nobody recieves anything
If everyone serves initially, there is a pretty good chance that everyone will receive something from one or more.
Maybe this is why your may come at the end of the week. Maybe this is why the tip comes at the end of the me.
www.churchofjesuschrist.org/comeuntochrist/believe/bible/bible-verses-about-helping-others
If
work = service to your fellow man
$ = reward for service to your fellow man
$ = work storage = service storage
$ = reward to others who serve you
Net service storage = wealth
Net service demand = debt
Therefore
It is better to serve others than demand service from others.
It is better to give than to receive.
